Haight

I was a bit worn out after hanging out with Herb, so I didn't really take shots that communicate the full on Haight.  Not enough hippies or weirdos.  

But, alas.  I have what I have.  Of course, stopping to take pictures of weirdos opens you up to weirdos, which is lame.  So we stopped for pizza and ran.

It was pretty good.  And a little while later energy came back.

 

I'd share some pictures from Herb with you, but it was so disorienting, I didn't really take any.  Go figure.

 

In the end.  Haight wasn't exactly our spot.  That's allright, we notched it off of the good old checklist.  Enjoy, jon

Hotel One

The Hotel Kabuki. 

Each room has a balcony, with a great view.

If you look really closely, you can see the San Francisco Bay.  And not so closely, this very large church.  Go figure.

 

Compulsory interior shot.  That really cool piece of fabric at the base of the bed, $80 U.S. C'mon.  We went shopping for our own version, made in Japan.  More expensive.

A pre-Herb stretch.  Who's Herb?  Herb was provided by the hotel to give us a quick tour of San Fran for orientation purposes.  Which will get its own section, don't worry.

 

The hotel was highlighted in NY Times recently.  The owner is famous for buying poorly maintained, but valuable, properties to turn them around.

 

Certainly catered to the Japanese theme.  And go figure, most of the guests were Asian.  Maybe not most, but damn, there were plenty of Asians.

Last lobby shot, last hotel shot.  We liked the Hotel Kabuki.  It was in a great part of town.  Relatively quiet, but certainly urban.  And an attached mall, the Japan Center, which was awesome.  Enjoy, jon

Still Before Noon

Back to San Francisco. And still before noon.  I found so many interesting trees.  But also found it is rather difficult to take a picture of a tree.  Who knew.

 

The Ugli flower (not its real name) was only sometimes ugly.  I liked it and Kat mocked it.  Eventually we saw the ugli flower here in many iterations of color, which you won't get to see now.

 

I"m stuck.  Trying to balance some thematic shots, with pure timeline shots.  I'm not sure my current hybrid will work.  Right now we are still pre-Herb and pre-noon, but there are several themes in that time.  Houses, Japan Center, and hotel, which all have crossover of their own.

 

I suppose the thematic work my survive.  Plus, I'll like to highlight some individually.  Basically, I'm a figidty mess who won't stick to a single way of doing things.

Exclamation!  and a weird format of only half capitalized!

 

Flowers were half blooming.  It must be fun to set up a garden that blooms year round.

 

I wonder if this congregation is Jewish or Catholic?  Sherith Isreal with a giant stained glassed window seems really strange.

A Series

An intro shot. A great bridge before a set up shot. Such that an audience knows approximentaly what to expect. Next up a set up shot. A wider angle whole view picture, a way to view before a specific set of parts. That is generally how I try and do my photos. Mostly I forget. Also the case here. But, without further ado,

The Bush-Street Cottage row historical distract is about eight houses long and thirty feet wide. A nifty little mini park.

Also the first place we walked to on our first full day in San Francisco. Not a purposeful walk mind you, just checking out the immediate area around our hotel.

I can think of a couple of mini parks in Milwaukee, but none quite the same. So completely tucked away behind a high hedge it could have easily been someone's private backyard.

It was meticuously maintained. The one lady in the park besides us, definitely gave us a look like we didn't belong. She, like everyone else, was walking her dog.

Which they clearly had a problem with dog leavings, since they had to step up the rhetoric on the sign. All the other signs I saw used euphemisms further from dog shit than this one.

Being earlyish morning, it was pretty shady in the enclave. The advantage of cover was no wind. Though some of my pictures have turned out darker than I would like, admitidly a big problem throughout the trip.

My landscape version has the flowers stand out a little more, but Kat a little less. Obviously I like the portrait version.

It was a rather brilliant open to a brilliant trip. Considering if we had chosen to walk south instead of north we would have been in a bad part of town, lucky as well.
